Gen Z and Millennials Now Drive 50% of Holiday Spending: The 2026 Video Plan for Houston, America's Youngest Big Metro

Deloitte projects Gen Z and millennials will drive 50% of 2026 holiday spending — a first. Here is the video plan for Houston's young-skewing market.

Gen Z and Millennials Now Drive 50% of Holiday Spending: The 2026 Video Plan for Houston, America's Youngest Big Metro

For the first time ever, Gen Z and millennials are projected to account for half of all U.S. holiday spending, according to Deloitte's 2026 Holiday Retail Survey. For Houston brands the implication is direct: the metro with the youngest population among its major-metro peers is about to run its most youth-driven holiday season on record, and the channels those buyers use — short-form video, social search, creator-style content — reward the brands that show up on screen, not the ones with the biggest print budget.

Here is what the survey says, why it hits harder in Houston, and the video plan to act on it before the season closes.

What Does Deloitte's 2026 Holiday Survey Actually Say?

Deloitte surveyed 4,000 U.S. consumers between August 26 and September 10, 2026. The numbers worth saving:

  • Average holiday spend: $1,654 per household, up 4% from $1,595 in 2025.
  • Gen Z and millennials are expected to drive 50% of holiday spending — the first time in the survey's history the two youngest adult generations account for half the wallet.
  • Retail goods are projected at $988 per household, up 10%, while spending on experiences dips 4% to $666. Gifts are back.
  • Online shopping takes 55% of retail budgets. The phone is the store.
  • 38% of shoppers qualify as "value seekers" — and they plan to spend 12% *more* than everyone else, not less. Deal-hunting is a buying signal, not a budget cut.
  • 28% of shoppers expect to exhaust their holiday budgets by the end of October — the highest share in six years.

Read that last one again. It is October 20. For more than a quarter of shoppers, the brand that earns attention in the next two weeks gets the sale; after that, the money is gone.

Why Does This Matter More in Houston Than Anywhere Else?

Because Houston is younger than the rest of the country, the national shift toward Gen Z and millennial spending gets amplified here. The Greater Houston Partnership's analysis of Census data puts metro Houston's median age at 35.7, versus 39.2 nationally — the youngest population among its peer metros. Houston also keeps adding young residents, drawn by jobs and a cost of living that still lets a 26-year-old build a life.

Stack that on the spending data and the math is simple: if Gen Z and millennials are half the holiday wallet nationally, in Houston they are likely more than half of yours. A Houston retailer, restaurant, med spa or service brand whose holiday marketing is built for how a 55-year-old shops is now marketing to the smaller half of its own market.

How Do Gen Z and Millennial Shoppers Actually Buy?

These buyers do not browse, then buy. They watch, then buy:

  • They discover on the feed. Short-form video on TikTok, Reels and YouTube Shorts is where gift ideas enter the list. The first second of the video is the ad — hook or scroll.
  • They verify on the screen. Before visiting a shop or booking a service, they check the videos: what the place looks like, who runs it, what the product does in real hands.
  • They trust people over polish for discovery. Native, founder-led, camera-forward content earns the first look. One idea per video, keyword captions, local specificity.
  • They buy where they watch. With 55% of retail budgets flowing online, a watchable product video sitting next to the buy button is not decoration — it is the last salesperson in the room.

None of that happens with a logo animation and a stock-photo carousel. It takes a steady supply of video made for the screen it plays on.

The Houston Holiday Video Plan for a Younger Buyer

A plan you can run between now and December:

1. This week: shoot a founder-led gift guide. You on camera, five products or services, one line each on who it is for. Cut it into one 60-second anchor video and five single-idea verticals.
2. Lead with value, loudly. Deloitte's value seekers outspend everyone else by 12%. Put the offer, the bundle or the price advantage in the first line of the caption and the first second of the video — Houston's low local inflation means those dollars actually stretch.
3. Post on a cadence, not a campaign. One video is a lottery ticket; three per week through December 20 is a strategy. Batch one shoot day into 12-15 cuts.
4. Make the location a character. Houston landmarks, neighborhood names and local references are why a local viewer stops scrolling past one more national ad.
5. Keep a hard-sell version for warm audiences only. Retarget viewers who watched 50%+ with the direct offer. Cold viewers get value first.

Save this list. It is the difference between joining the season and watching it.
